Doesn’t Add Up
Thursday 24 March 2005

At work I’m doing a two shift system which is more complex than it should be.

Week one, I work 5:50am to 2:05pm Monday to Thursday and 5:50am to 12:50pm on Friday. Essentially doing an extra 15 minutes and then clawing it all back on the Friday.

Week two, I work 2:05pm to 10:05pm Monday to Thursday and 12:50m to 8:50pm on Friday. Eight hours a day but Friday messed up because of the other shift pattern.

It’s then repeated. So far so good.

This week it’s Good Friday so there is no Friday work. However since the people on the early shift this week (not me) have done 15 minutes extra, they are finishing early on Thursday (today). Now almost everybody in the place is saying they’ll finish the same time they would on a Friday and every single time I have to point out that they’ve not done the extra 15 minutes on Friday and therefore shouldn’t finish at 12:50pm but should, in fact, finish at 1:05pm (normal finish is 2:05pm, they’ve done 4 lots of 15 mins which is one hour earlier, so that’s 1:05). Everybody without exception looks at me for a moment and then says “oh yeah!”.

Somebody is trying to screw me into working an extra 15 minutes for nothing. Everyone else is falling for it too! Gits.
